Use Same Theme On Another Dashboard
How to use the same theme of the dashboard in Power BI to another one
Before you get into this one, if you have not done it already, read about how to create your own custom theme in Power BI from one of the previous newsletters I sent it out.
Now, that we have created our theme (looks like the below), we can go ahead and export those settings in terms of colors and then either load those ones to another dashboard or modify it as needed before applying it.
If you want to check the colors we have chosen, Go to View tab, and then Customize current theme.
This is the light version of this theme. Ideally, I usually setup two themes, one light version and one dark version. The reason for that is because you want people to be able to read it through projectors as well and light environment will have a huge impact in the way dashboard looks.
If you are happy with the colors you have chosen, go to View tab again and then select Save current theme.
This will generate .json file (click on it if you want to learn more), which basically all it does is that it saves all the color HEX codes in this file.
Save the file to the location you want. Now that you saved the .json file of the theme, you can go to the new dashboard that you want to create and load this theme.
It is preferred that you load the theme before you start working on the dashboard, the reason for that is because colors will be linked to the visuals and let’s say later on you want to change any of the colors, those changes will be applied to the all visuals that this color was used.
In order to load it, go to View tab and then select Browse for themes. Then, select the .json file you saved it earlier, this will apply the new theme automatically. You are all set.
If you are Geeky enough, then you can take this to another step. The .json file we saved, we can open it with an editor (there are plenty of free versions such as Sublime, Visual Studio, Brackets). I used Brackets this time.
Here you can change the hex codes for any color you want. If you are new to HEX color codes, you can learn more here. But basically you can do a quick search on Google [my favorite color] + [HEX] word.
Enough, let’s end it here. Spam me if you need more info on this topic.
Cheers.
That theme looks good. I wonder about the green/blue though because there are a lot of colourblind people out there who might have a problem seeing the different colour & shades. I generally try for greater contrast, but each to their own. :)
There's a very handy tool for creating .json files at https://powerbi.tips/tools/report-theme-generator-v3/. I used this to teach myself how to put a theme together.
